Jag Blir Hellre Jagad Av Vargar
Orup
Orup’s August 1987 single paired Anders Glenmark’s polished synth-pop production with a sharply ironic account of escaping an overbearing relationship. Honed on tour supporting Roxette, it reached number six on Trackslistan and helped build momentum for his solo debut album the following year.

When Swedish Pop Found Its Sharpest Edge in the Late Summer of 1987
In August 1987, Thomas Orup Eriksson dropped a single that rearranged the furniture in Scandinavian pop music. Up until that point, Swedish radio had plenty of polished synth arrangements, but very few artists dared to deliver a domestic breakup lyric with quite this much dry venom and razor-sharp wit.
Recorded at the legendary Polar Studio in Stockholm with producer Anders Glenmark at the desk, the track took the glistening pulse of contemporary synth-pop and married it to a chorus that was impossible to dislodge once it entered your head. Glenmark gave it the tight snap of international radio records, yet the songwriting remained entirely idiosyncratic. It sounded completely at home coming out of a portable cassette deck on a late August evening, capturing that distinct shift when summer daylight starts shrinking and pop melodies take on a slightly colder, dramatic tone.
01The Audacity of Running Toward the Pack
Pop songs about falling out of love usually lean on sorrow, regret, or dramatic pleading. Orup went in the opposite direction, treating romantic exhaustion with sudden theatrical clarity. The central metaphor of preferring a pack of wild predators over another day inside a suffocating relationship felt daringly bold on Swedish airwaves.
Behind the lively groove and slick rhythm section sat a surprisingly frank narrative of regaining autonomy. Lines exploring the uneven dynamics of being completely overshadowed by an overbearing partner resonated instantly with listeners who knew the feeling all too well. The delivery never slipped into melodrama. It was delivered with an ironic wink, a buoyant rhythm, and a conversational cadence that felt like a frank conversation with an old acquaintance who had finally walked away from a hopeless mess.
“The road to the radio charts was built on relentless touring.
Jag blir hellre jagad av vargar Jag blir hellre ensam så jag säger nej Hellre jagad av vargar än älskad av dig Än älskad av dig
02From Folkets Park to the Top of the Dial
The road to the radio charts was built on relentless touring. During the summer of 1987, Orup honed the track live across the country while supporting Roxette, playing packed venues like Gävle Folkets Park only a day before the official single release. That live trial by fire made the song feel thoroughly lived-in before the vinyl even landed in the shops.
When it reached Trackslistan in late September, the track spent four solid weeks climbing among the most voted songs in the country, eventually peaking at number six. Over on the 7" format, backed with Jag sitter och väntar på min älskling, it carried the momentum that ultimately paved the way for his solo debut album early the following year. By then, that memorable opening line had already cemented itself into Swedish pop history, leaving a mark that remains as sharp as ever.
